Passing the Guard: Thoughts on UFC on Fox 1

Music to listen to: Another awesome jam by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Before the UFC of Fox event last Saturday, I was telling people who were unfamiliar with MMA that the results of the heavyweight title match between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos could be anything. We could see a five-round wrestling match, a submission, a knockout, anything that would represent MMA.

Seeing Dos Santos knock out Velasquez in the first round wasn’t shocking, disappointing or any other negative review that you’re going to hear. It was MMA, where you can see any result.

A bad decision by the judges would have been a negative. A gruesome injury that sports stations could replay to glorify the violence of MMA would have been a negative. What happened Saturday night wasn’t any of those things.

As for the actual fight itself, I was surprised that Velasquez stayed in Dos Santos’ boxing pocket as long as he did. I expected Velasquez to diversify his footwork and try to move around more because Dos Santos had the major advantage in standup. When I was watching the first minute of the fight, I thought that Velasquez looked uncomfortable in the cage and couldn’t find his timing.

The only thing that disappointed me about the Fox broadcast beside having to see Brock Lesnar try to analyze the fight without being objective was not being able to see the Ben Henderson/Clay Guida fight on broadcast television. I saw the entire fight on Facebook and it was outstanding. The probable Fight of the Year had everything you would ever want in an MMA contest and would have been a great introduction to the sport on network television for new fans. Even after the Dos Santos/Velasquez fight, there was time to replay the fight and I would have rather saw that than hear the commentary mentioned earlier.
