I’m not a fan of making grand statements about athletes, music groups, actors and other forms of entertainment being labeled “the best ever.” Trying to compare Michael Jordan to Bill Russell, Andre the Giant to the Rock, Robert De Niro to Johnny Depp, The Beatles to U2, you get the idea. Technology, economy and other factors make it difficult to compare eras.
However…the Wu Tang Clan was/is the greatest collection of talent in the history of hip hop, maybe of all music. To be fair, when you have a group that unofficially consists of up to 10 members, the numerical odds are stacked in your favor.
I mention this is our latest edition of Educating the Babies because the group has recently announced the release of a new album which will come in the form of only one pressed copy. I don’t like publicity stunts like this and someone will eventually burn that copy and we’ll hear it for free but this is a significant moment in hip-hop history if it goes down. However, everything with the Wu is subject to change so until the album is released, you will never know.
Anyway, as someone who grew up in Brooklyn in the 1990’s, the musical impact those guys had on the culture can’t be understated. Younger music fans may just see a group of old men trying to relive their glory and I can understand that perspective. However, they still need to be educated on the Wu’s greatness. Enjoy.
