Seminoles Square Off With Baylor In Elimination Game
No. 8 seeded Florida State (55-8) will play in the first elimination game of the 2014 WCWS against 13th-seeded Baylor (47-15) at 11 a.m. CT on Sat, May 31 at OGE Energy Field at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
Baylor enters the game having lost to Florida by a score of 11-0 in five innings in its first game of the 2014 WCWS on May 29. The Bears are led by sixth-year senior pitcher Whitney Canion who was named a first-team All-American on May 28. Canion is 31-11 on the season with a 1.44 ERA and 10 shutouts. She has recorded 298 strikeouts in 243.0 innings and is allowing a batting average of just .175.
The Noles are looking for their first WCWS win since defeating Washington, 2-0, in 2004. Florida State is 6-15 all-time at the Women’s College World Series. FSU fell to Oregon, 3-0, in its opening game of the 2014 WCWS.
The winner of Saturday’s game will play later that day at 6 p.m. CT against the loser of Friday’s Kentucky/Alabama game.
Louisville Women’s Lacrosse Finishes Season in Top 15 in Final Coaches’ Poll
The University of Louisville women’s lacrosse team capped its unparalleled season with a program record top-15 finish in the final Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association poll.
The Cardinals, voted 11th in the final rankings, won a school record 16 games (16-4), while going undefeated in BIG EAST play at 7-0 for outright possession of the league’s regular-season title. Of those 16 wins, three were upset victories over IWLCA top-20 teams.
Under head coach Kellie Young’s guidance, Louisville reached its first NCAA Tournament appearance in the program’s seven years and didn’t stop there. The Cardinals defeated No. 10 Ohio State in double overtime to reach the NCAA Sweet 16. Before the loss to fifth-ranked Northwestern, the Cardinals recorded 12-consecutive victories for the third-longest streak in Division I this year.
Prior to reaching the NCAA Tournament, Louisville secured the BIG EAST’s automatic berth by capturing the league’s tournament title with victories over Rutgers and Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
The Cardinals swept all four major BIG EAST awards for the first time the conference’s 14-year history. Young was the unanimous coach of the year, Nikki Boltja was unanimous attack player of the year, Kaylin Morissette earned midfielder of the year honors, and Monica Negron was defensive player of the year. In total, eight student-athletes were tabbed all-conference performers (seven on the first team).
