The Vanderbilt and Ole Miss have advanced to the super regionals and are each two wins away from reaching the College World Series.
The Commodores advanced to the Super Regionals when freshman Ro Coleman slapped a bases-loaded, walk-off single to left field to give Vanderbilt a 3-2 comeback victory over Oregon in the championship game of the Nashville Regional at Hawkins Field on June 1.
Vanderbilt (44-18) collected just six hits in the game, but the dominating pitching of Walker Buehler — who tossed a complete game — coupled with some opportunistic moments on offense set up the Commodores for their first walk-off win of the season.
The Commodores will host Stanford in a best-of-three series starting on Friday. Vanderbilt will be making an appearance in the Super Regionals for the fourth time in the past five seasons, and for the fifth time in the program’s history. All of them have happened under head coach Tim Corbin, who arrived in 2003. Vandy’s lone College World Series appearance came in 2011.
With an RBI triple in the 10th inning from Sikes Orvis, Ole Miss (44-18) advanced to its Super Regional with to a 3-2 win over Washington on June 2.
Scott Weathersby picked up the win in relief, working 5.1 scoreless innings with two hits, two walks and tying a career high with six strikeouts. Weathersby entered the game in the fifth to relieve starter Sam Smith, who allowed two unearned runs in 4.2 innings of work in the start.
It marks the fifth time in its last nine NCAA Tournament appearances that Ole Miss has advanced to a Super Regional and the seventh time in the last nine NCAA Tournament appearances that the Rebels have played in an NCAA Regional Championship.
The Rebels will now travel to face Louisiana-Lafayette for the right to go to the College World Series. The Rebels have been to the World Series four times in the program’s history with the last appearance happening in 1972.
