Pentecost named First Team All-America
The awards continue to roll in for Kennesaw State junior Max Pentecost as the catcher was officially named a First Team All-American by Baseball America, it was revealed on Tuesday.
The Winder, Georgia, native, who became the highest MLB draft pick in KSU history when the Toronto Blue Jays selected him 11thoverall, led the nation in total hits in 2014 with his 113.
Pentecost helped lead the Owls to a historic season in which the team won its first ever Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, its first Regional Title and made its first Super Regional appearance.
The catcher also ranked second in the nation in batting average at .422 and put together the nation’s longest hit-streak at any point this season at 36 straight.
Pentecost’s 113 hits set a new single-season mark in the A-Sun as well as in the KSU record books while also pacing the Owls in homers with his nine, RBIs with 61 and in stolen bases with 17.
Defensively, the catcher caught 22 runners attempting to steal while compiling a fielding percentage of .976.
Volleyball announces schedule
The following Tuesday on September 2, the team will head right up the road to play at UT-Chattanooga at 6 p.m.
After four road contests, KSU will play host in the Kennesaw State Invitational. They will open up the tournament on Friday, September 5 against Elon at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, September 6 the Owls will play UNC Asheville at noon and then finish off the tournament against the Purdue Boilermakers at 7:30 p.m.
Next up, the Owls will head to the beach for the Coastal Carolina Tournament. They will open up the tournament against the Tennessee Volunteers at 9 a.m. on Friday, September 12. Later that day, they will play the host school in Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m.Then on Saturday, September 13 they will play Loyola Maryland at 11 a.m.
In their last non-conference tournament, the team will fly to New York for the Stony Brook Tournament where they will take on Western Michigan and Stony Brook on Friday and St. Francis-Brooklyn on Saturday.
After getting back from New York, the Owls will travel right down I-75 to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, September 23 at 5 p.m.
“The first thing I learned was that this is a really good conference,” Schunzel said. “From top to bottom, there are some really good teams. There are a lot of really good coaches and teams are well trained and prepared so you better be ready to go. That was something as a program last year that we learned that if you don’t prepare for every team the same you’re going to get beat. We found that out the hard way last year and this year we’ll do an even better job.”
With conference play winding down, the Owls have two road trips to close out the conference season. First, they will travel to FGCU and Stetson on November 7-8 before going to Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb to play on November 14-15.
The Atlantic Sun Tournament will be in Fort Myers, Florida with FGCU being the host on November 20-22.
To finish out the regular season, KSU will head to Athens, Georgia to take on the Bulldogs at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 28.
