The Atlanta Silverbacks’ historic run in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup came to an end on Wednesday night, as the team fell to Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, 3-1, at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.

A goal from Silverbacks forward Deon McCaulay made the score 1-1 early in the second half, but late strikes from Fire midfielders Jeff Larentowicz and Alex put the game out of reach for the Silverbacks.

The Silverbacks were forced to make some changes to the lineup following their 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids in the Cup’s fifth round. Midfielders Borfor Carr and Kwadwo Poku and forward Jaime Chavez were all suspended due to red cards received in that game, as were technical director Eric Wynalda and Ricardo Montoya. Silverbacks Reserves Head Coach Alejandro Pombo took the helm on Wednesday, giving Ferrety Sousa, Jesus Gonzalez, and McCaulay starts in place of the suspended players.

The Silverbacks now get set to kick off the NASL Fall Season, visiting the Tampa Bay Rowdies this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
