Atlanta Dream guard/forward Angel McCoughtry has been named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It marks the 13th Player of the Week award for McCoughtry during her six-year career, and second this season.
McCoughtry – the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for June – led the Dream to a 3-0 record last week while topping the conference in scoring (22.0), tying for first in steals (2.3), tying for fifth in assists (4.0) and adding 6.7 rebounds per game. She helped the Dream solidify its hold on the Eastern Conference lead, as the Dream improved to 15-5 overall to build a 5.5-game lead in the conference.
McCoughtry started her week with 22 points, six rebounds and four assists in an 83-71 victory over Connecticut last Tuesday (July 8). Saturday night in Indiana, she contributed 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals during a 19-point (93-74) victory over the Fever.
Sunday evening, on the second night of back-to-back games, she poured in 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds – both matching her season highs – for her second double-double of the year to help Atlanta claim an 81-79 overtime victory over Chicago. She also added four more assists and a pair of steals.
McCoughtry, who will start for the East in Saturday’s WNBA All-Star game, currently leads the league in steals (2.33), ranks third in scoring (20.0), 11th in assists (4.2) and 20th in rebounds (5.6). She has scored at least 20 points nine times in her 19 games.
