Release from Georgia State Athletics

ATLANTA – Adam Scott, formerly the pitching coach at Wallace State (Ala.) Community College-Hanceville, has been named pitching coach for the Georgia State baseball program, and current staff members Willie Stewart and Edwin Thompson have been promoted, head coach Greg Frady announced.

Stewart, entering his fourth season at Georgia State, has been elevated to assistant head coach, and Thompson, in his third season with the program, will take over as recruiting coordinator.

Scott comes to Georgia State from the strong junior college program at Wallace State-Hanceville, which produced Atlanta Braves All-Star reliever Craig Kimbrel. Scott served as the pitching coach the last three years under NJCAA Hall of Fame head coach Randy Putman.

All three of Scott’s sophomore pitchers from the 2014 squad earned Division I scholarships, including Georgia State signee Alex Hegner. In three seasons, he coached two pitchers who were drafted and six who went on to Division I programs.

A native of Hueytown, Ala., Scott was a two-year letterwinner as a pitcher at Alabama (2009-10), helping the Crimson Tide to NCAA tournament berths both years, including a Super Regional appearance as a senior. He began his college career at Shelton State (Ala.) C.C., which reached the JUCO World Series in 2008, when Scott was named to the all-tournament team.

Stewart will continue to serve as the hitting coach after guiding the Panthers to impressive offensive production the last two years. This spring, Georgia State belted 60 home runs, ranking second in the nation in homers per game, and GSU was one of only two schools in the nation with three players in double-digit home runs. In 2013, the Panthers finished in the top five nationally in batting average and runs per game.

Stewart joined the GSU staff in 2011-12 after spending five seasons as the head coach at UNC Asheville. In 2006, he led the Bulldogs to the first and only NCAA tournament appearance in school history.

Thompson came to Georgia State in 2012 after two years as an assistant coach at Duke, where he was part of a coaching staff that developed pitcher Marcus Stroman, who is excelling in his first Major League season with the Toronto Blue Jays. Thompson is also a former collegiate head coach, serving two years (2009-10) as the head coach at Division III Bates College in Maine.
