Release from Georgia State Athletics:
ATLANTA – Playing 11 of its first 12 matches on the road, the Georgia State volleyball team continues that trend this weekend when it travels to Louisiana-Monroe on Friday and to South Alabama on Sunday for a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches.
“We are excited for the first full weekend of conference play,” head coach Sally Polhamus said. “Both teams on our schedule this weekend have produced strong non-conference wins this season. What makes the Sun Belt so good is the high level of competition.”
Friday’s match against ULM (6-7, 0-0) is slated for 8 p.m. ET. Georgia State swept the season series against the Warhawks a season ago, winning 3-0 in both contests.
After a travel day on Saturday, the Panthers (2-8, 0-1) have a 1 p.m. meeting with South Alabama (5-5, 0-0). The Panthers didn’t fare as well against the Jaguars, dropping both matches to the Jaguars 3-1 in 2013.
Junior Deidra Bohannon has double-digit kills in all but two matches this season. Bohannon led the team a year ago in kills and was named to the all-Sun Belt team. The Atlanta native has 126 kills so far this season which is most on the team.
Junior Eliza Zachary leads the team in hitting percentage at .372. Zachary has been a force on defense as well and is atop the team’s leaderboard in blocks with 22.
This is not the conference opener for the Panthers. GSU faced Appalachian State in a tournament last weekend and since it was hosted by the Mountaineers, it was counted as a conference match. App State won 3-0.
GSU returns home on Sept. 26 to host UALR at 6 p.m. in the GSU Sports Arena.
