Release from Georgia State Athletics:

ATLANTAWhitney Ravan has been named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week after her two goal performance in the Panthers’ 2-0 win over rival Georgia Southern, the conference office announced Tuesday.

A native of Whitewater, Colo., Ravan scored both goals in the women’s soccer team’s 2-0 victory at the GSU Soccer Complex on Sunday, Oct. 12. GSU dominated the match from the opening whistle and this was due in large part to the senior forward’s ability to hold up play against the Eagles’ back line. Ravan physically dominated the Georgia Southern defense and was quickest to the ball twice to bag her two goals.

She gave Georgia State a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when she scored her sixth goal of the season. After a Georgia Southern foul just outside the 18-yard box, Jenna Moore fired a low free kick that beat the Eagle goalkeeper but it deflected off the left post. The ball then hit the keeper and was loose inside the six-yard box. Ravan beat her defender to the ball and tapped it into the open net with the outside of her left foot.

Then in the 21st minute, Ravan bagged her second of the match and seventh of the season to double the GSU advantage. After another Georgia Southern foul, Margaret Bruemmer sent a dangerous free kick into the box. Lauren Harriman out-jumped her marker and headed the ball towards the bottom-right corner. The Eagles goalkeeper made a diving save but the rebound fell to Ravan who lifted it over the keeper and into the back of the net.

  • Ravan has now scored five goals and recorded one assist in her past four matches.
  • She leads the Sun Belt with 11 points and five goals in conference matches only.
  • Ravan has seven goals and one assist for a team-high 15 points this season.

The Panthers are 5-6-4 overall and 3-1-1 in the Sun Belt. GSU currently sits in fourth place in the conference standings with four matches to play.
