Georgia State junior R.J. Hunter and Georgia Tech sophomore Kaela Davis were among the list of nominees for the 2015 Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams as announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Allstate Insurance Company on Wednesday.
A total of 251 nominees were selected this year across all levels of college basketball. Ten men and 10 female winners will be selected to receive the top-honor in February. The Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams represent the sport’s finest in the areas of leadership and charitable achievements amongst their peers. The prestigious community service award recognizes a distinguished group of student-athlete who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the lives others and contributing to the great good in their communities.
Hunter, who was the Sun Belt Player of the Year and an AP All-America honorable mention honoree last year, is averaging 22.9 points per game this season, tops in the Sun Belt and fourth in the NCAA. He recently moved into the top-5 in career scoring at Georgia State following a preseason in which he was named the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year and to the Lou Henson Award Watch List as one of the top mid-major players in the country.
Off the court, Hunter is active in the community, including multiple trips with his father and coach, Ron Hunter, on trips with Samaritan’s Feet to distribute shoes and hope all around the world. This past summer, Hunter and his teammates traveled to Costa Rica to distribute shoes as a part of an eight-day trip. It marked Hunter’s fourth trip abroad to distribute shoes. He has also participated in volunteer activities at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and with the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta.
Davis has initiated a relationship with the St. Jude Foundation and serves as the campus leader for Georgia Tech to build a partnership between the school and St. Jude’s. This involves establishing an executive board of 10-12 students at Georgia Tech, facilitating campus meetings to generate interest in community service activities with St. Jude’s, and organizing a fundraiser for St. Jude’s entitled “Up Til Dawn.”
Davis also participates in many team community service initiatives including trips to the Ronald McDonald House, collecting toys and monetary donations for the annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive, volunteering and visiting schools with the Jacket to Jacket Reading Program, participating in the Atlanta Girls on the Run program which includes making visits to schools and volunteering at events, and cheering on participants in events like the Atlanta 2 Day Walk for Breast Cancer and the 2014 Atlanta Alzheimer’s Walk.
Davis has been named a captain of the Yellow Jackets as both a freshman and sophomore. Davis is also a leader off the court, serving as one of women’s basketball’s representatives on the Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board.
The Suwannee, Ga. native currently leads the Yellow Jackets with an average of 18.3 points per game. Davis is currently on a 20-game double-figure scoring streak. She has scored in double figures in 37 games of her 40-game career. She has 18 career 20 point games, including four this season. She was named to the 2014 Preseason All-ACC Team by both the media and coaches. Most recently, Davis was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 30.
