Release from Kennesaw State Athletics:

After leading the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team to a pair of wins over the past week, sophomore Deandrea Sawyers earned Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday (Dec. 8).

It is the third weekly accolade for the Owls this season after junior Jasmine McAllister took home back-to-back Newcomer of the Week honors on Nov. 24 and Dec. 1 and the first Player of the Week honor for the sophomore this season. She also took come Newcomer of the Week accolades as a freshman last season.

“Deandrea has been working extremely hard all year long,” said head coach Nitra Perry. “She is the kind of kid that will go every rep and never utters one complaint. She has grown tremendously since last season and continues to be a consistent presence for us in practice and games.”

Sawyers poured in a team-high 39 points over the week as the Owls registered the program’s first-ever win over Georgia State last Wednesday, before returning to the KSU Convocation Center after a three-week absence for a 65-60 victory over Murray State on Saturday.

She averaged 19.5 points per game, while going 16-of-29 from the field for a 55.2 field goal percentage, including draining 7-of-13 from behind the arc and did not commit a turnover in 80 minutes of action.

Against the Panthers, Sawyers was two points shy of a career-high with 22 points, including four three-pointers. She continued her offensive prowess on Saturday, pacing the Owls against the Racers with a team-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including hitting 3-of-4 from the three-point line.

For the season, the Nashville, Tenn., native is averaging a league-second best 15.4 points, to go with 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists, while shooting at a 46.1 clip from the field.
