Release from Kennesaw State Athletics:
Junior point guard Yonel Brown was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week after averaging 28.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two games against Tennessee State and Thomas University.
“It’s a great honor for Yonel,” head coach Jimmy Lallathin said. “He’s worked extremely hard off the floor and has been a great leader for us this year. We’re really excited about his leadership ability and growth as we start conference play.”
After scoring a game-high 21 points at Tennessee State on Dec. 31, Brown followed that performance with a school-record 36 points and season-high five rebounds versus Thomas University on Jan. 3. He scored 25 of his 36 points in the first half and finished 13 of 20 (65.0 percent) from the field, including 4-for-7 (57.1 percent) from 3-point territory and was 6-for-6 from the foul line.
The performance marked Brown’s second 30-point output of the year and eclipsed the school record of 32 points that he shared with teammate Delbert Love. It also marks the highest point total for an A-Sun Conference player this season and ran his streak of double-digit scoring games to seven.
Brown has scored in double figures in 12 of 16 games and led the Owls in scoring eight times while averaging 15.1 points a contest and ranking in the top five in the A-Sun Conference.
This is the first weekly award that the Owls have won since the 2012-13 season when Markeith Cummings won the award on January 15.
