Release from Georgia Tech Athletics:

The Georgia Tech softball team (0-5) fell 2-0 to Arkansas (2-3) in its final game of the FAU Tournament Sunday at FAU Stadium. The Jackets tallied six hits to the Razorbacks’ two, but Tech left nine runners on base.

“We have to continue to improve on defense and cut down our errors in critical times,” head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “At the plate we are making things happen, we just have to finish. I’m proud of the way our pitching staff controlled a great hitting Arkansas team.”

Georgia Tech committed two fielding errors in the bottom of the third, allowing Autumn Russell on base and eventually allowing Russell to score, giving the Razorbacks a 1-0 lead.  Arkansas added to its lead in the fifth with a leadoff single by Russell, who stole second, moved to third on a grounder and scored on an RBI up the middle.

Tech put a pair of runners on base in the top of the seventh inning in Caitlyn Coffey and Morgan Taylor with one out. Samantha Pierannunzi singled and Chelsie Thomas reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases with two outs.

Karly Fullem stepped to the plate and hit a liner off the pitcher, who stayed with the play and made the throw to first just in time to save the situation.

Kylie Kleinschmidt (0-3) absorbed the loss, throwing five innings with two runs, one earned, on two hits. Freshman Emily Anderson pitched the remaining inning.

Sydney Wright (1-0) earned the win for the Razorbacks with six hits in a complete-game effort.

The Jackets are back in action Feb. 13-15 at the Florida State Unconquered Invitational. Tech will take on No. 8 Michigan twice, No. 18/20 Nebraska twice and Western Kentucky in Tallahassee, Fla.
