The Georgia Tech softball team (7-10, 0-2 ACC) fell to the Louisville Cardinals (7-5, 2-0) in a doubleheader, 6-1 and 5-4, Saturday in both teams’ ACC opener. The Jackets and Cardinals wrap up the series with a single game at 12 p.m. Sunday.
Katie Johnsky went 3-for-4 on the day to lead Georgia Tech with two doubles and three RBI. Samantha Pierannunzi added three runs and a home run in six at bats on the day.
Game 1: Louisville 6, Georgia Tech 1
Louisville got on the board first with a run in the opening stanza and the Jackets got it back in the bottom of the same frame. Pierannunzi took a pitch to the helmet to lead off the inning and two ground-outs moved her around to third. Johnsky smacked an RBI-double to bring in Pierannunzi.
Louisville regained the lead 3-1 on a two-run home run to left in the top of the fourth, and the Cardinals added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead and keep it.
Emily Anderson (3-4) suffered the loss with six runs on five hits in 5.2 innings.
Louisville’s Maryssa Becker (2-0) earned the win, throwing a complete game with one run on one hit.
Game 2: Louisville 5, Georgia Tech 4
After Louisville scored a run in the opening inning, Georgia Tech put three runs on the board on four hits in the bottom of the first.
Pierannunzi and Chelsie Thomas hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Johnsky stepped to the plate and scored both runners with a line drive double to left to put Tech up 2-1. A single to right from Courtney Ziese brought in Johnsky to make it 3-1.
The Cardinals made it a one-run game after managing to push a run across in the top of the third, but Pierannunzi’s home run – her third of the season – off the scoreboard in the fifth inning put Tech ahead by two, 4-2.
The tide turned in the sixth inning as Louisville hit a three-run home run to take the lead for good, 5-4.
Kylie Kleinschmidt (1-5) was pinned with the loss, pitching 6.0 innings with five runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts.
Shelby Mccombs (3-1) earned the win going 5.0 innings with one run on two hits.
