Release from Kennesaw State Athletics:
After leading the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team in scoring and rebounding for the 2014-15 season, junior Jasmine McAllister was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year and earned A-Sun All-Conference Second-Team honors, the league announced on Wednesday (March 4).
“I am very happy for Jasmine,” said head coach Nitra Perry. “She worked her tail off and was much deserving of this award. This is great momentum going into the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship for her and for our team.”
It is the first-ever Newcomer of the Year accolade in program history and is the fourth overall superlative honor KSU has collected during its time in the A-Sun after Britteny Henderson and Greteya Kelley earned Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2008 and Taylor Mills nabbed Freshman of the Year accolades in 2012.
McAllister brought home a record-tying six A-Sun Newcomer of the Week accolades in her first season in the Black and Gold, while helping to lead the Owls (17-12, 6-8) to their winningest season of the Division I era and their best finish in the conference since the 2011-12 campaign.
The Memphis, Tenn., native has paced the Owls with 395 points and 303 rebounds, averaging 13.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game to rank eighth and second in the A-Sun, respectively. She sat third in field goal percentage after shooting the ball at a 51.1 percent clip from the field, while also leading the A-Sun in offensive rebounds and ranking in the top-10 in blocks and defensive rebounds.
In conference action, McAllister ranked second with 9.5 rebounds, while sitting third with a 52.6 field goal percentage. She also added 12.7 points per game to rank 14th in scoring.
Nationally, McAllister’s 10.4 boards per game rank 29th, while her 4.2 offensive rebounds is 20th in the NCAA. She was the conference co-leader and ranks 21st in the nation with 14 double-doubles on the season, while also registering 17 games with 10 rebounds or more. ?She has also scored in double figures in 23 of the Owls’ 29 games this season, including posting three contests with 20 points or more.
Florida Gulf Coast’s Whitney Knight was tabbed the 2015 A-Sun Player of the Year, with the Eagles’ Karl Smesko earning Coach of the Year honors after leading his squad to an undefeated mark in conference play and the 2015 A-Sun Regular Season Title. Stetson’s Amber Porter was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while Kayla Gordon of Jacksonville took home Freshman of the Year honors.
