Release from Georgia State Athletics:
Georgia State sophomore LaPorscha Wells has been named the Sun Belt Female Field Athlete of the Week for the opening week of Outdoor Track and Field, the league office has announced.
Wells set a school record in winning the hammer throw competition at the JSU Quad Meet on March 14 in Jacksonville, Ala. Wells broke her own school record by eight feet in the hammer with a throw of 53.28m (174-10). Later in the day, she won a second event with a shot put toss of 15.06m (49-05) that was her personal-best distance in that event.
Wells won a Sun Belt Athlete of the Week Indoor Athlete of the Week on Feb. 18 and followed teammate Tracy Dorcemont, who won that award first on Jan. 15.
“LaPorscha had a great indoor season and looks like she will continue with a record-breaking outdoor season,” head coach Chris England said. “We look forward to seeing what else she can accomplish this year, but realize she is only a sophomore and she’ll have even more records ahead. Our whole group of throwers benefit by challenging one another in practice and meets.”
The 5-foot-9 sophomore is a former state champion shot putter (Class AA) and valedictorian at Josey High School in Augusta, Ga.
