Release from Georgia State Athletics:
Alabama shoot guard Devin Mitchell, who played locally at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, has announced that he will transfer to Georgia State. He will have three years of eligibility remaining
His paperwork has been accepted and he will start classes and practice with the Panthers this summer.
Mitchell played in 14 games and made one start as a freshman, averaging 0.6 points in 5.4 minutes per game. He finished the season with three field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, dishing out four assists and swiping three steals.
Following a successful senior season at Collins Hill High School, he was named to the AJC Class AAAAAA All-State First-Team after averaging 16.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He was also named Gwinnettprepsports.com’s 6A Regional Player of the Year.
As a junior, he led all of Gwinnett County averaging 20.2 points per game, pulling down six rebounds and three assists per contest and shooting 42 percent from 3-point range. He set a school-record with 41 points scored in a tournament game at Gainesville.
“Devin is an extremely talented shooting guard who I am glad decided to come home to finish his collegiate career,” head coach Ron Hunter said. “He was highly-recruited out of high school and will be a valuable addition to our team. We look forward to getting to work with him when practices begin.
“Since my arrival at Georgia State, we have had several student-athletes who wanted to transfer home and have been positive additions to the program. I have no doubt in my mind that Devin will join that group and we are glad that he will get to play in front of his family again.”
Mitchell was ranked as high as No. 57 in the country by one service coming out of high school and even as high as the No. 2 player in the state.
Coming off its second-straight Sun Belt Championship, 25-win season and an NCAA tournament appearance, Georgia State will look to sign two more players in the coming weeks.
