Adam Smith Signs Grant-in-Aid with Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball

Adam Smith, the leading scorer and three-point shooter at Virginia Tech last season, has signed grant-in-aid papers and will play his final season of eligibility at Georgia Tech, head coach Brian Gregory announced.

The 6-1, 170-pound guard led the Hokies in scoring (13.4 points per game) and shot an Atlantic Coast Conference-best 42.4 percent from three-point range last season. He played in 33 games, starting 21, and reached double figures in all but four ACC games during the 2014-15 season. He scored 15 points (one three-pointer) in a 65-63 win over the Yellow Jackets in Blacksburg. As a junior, Smith averaged 11.0 points and hit 35.8 percent of his three-point shots in 14 games (nine starts) in an injury-shortened season.

“We are extremely excited about Adam joining the Yellow Jacket family,” said Gregory, entering his fifth season on the Flats. “His playmaking ability and shooting skill set will make an immediate impact on our team.”

A native of Jonesboro, Ga., Smith attended Fayette County High School, where he led the Tigers to the AAAA state semifinals and a 30-3 record as a senior, and averaged 26.2 points. A second-team Parade All-American, he signed and played his freshman year at UNC-Wilmington, where he started 29 games and averaged 13.7 points, earning a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association all-rookie team.

Smith is set to receive his bachelor’s degree in communications from Virginia Tech on May 16, and will be enrolled for Georgia Tech’s second summer term which begins June 22.

Smith is the second addition to the Georgia Tech roster for the 2015-16. Sylvester Ogbonda, a 6-10 post player from Fort Washington, Md., signed a letter-of-intent to play at Tech in November. Ogbonda led National Christian Academy to a 20-6 record in 2014-15 and a state ranking of No. 14.
