Release from Georgia Athletics:
Georgia outfielder Keegan McGovern has been named to the Freshman All-SEC baseball team, the league announced Monday.
McGovern, a 6-3, 207-pound native of Willacoochee, Ga., appeared in 48 games with 43 starts in left field. He batted .268 with nine doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI and posted a perfect fielding percentage in 69 total chances. He registered 11 multi-hit games including an impressive debut in the season opener when he went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI against Eastern Illinois. Also, McGovern tallied three-hit games against Florida State and on the road versus Alabama and Auburn.
Starting in 2005, SEC coaches have selected an 11-member Freshman All-SEC squad. McGovern joins Bulldog pitcher Joshua Fields (2005), third baseman Colby May (2009), outfielder Hunter Cole (2012) and pitcher Sean McLaughlin (2013) to be selected to the team.
Also on Monday, the coaches All-SEC first and second teams were released by the league along with the Player of the Year (Andrew Benintendi, Arkansas), Pitcher of the Year (Carson Fulmer, Vanderbilt), Freshman of the Year (Alex Lange, LSU), Scholar-Athlete of the Year (Seth Heck, Miss. State) and Coach of the Year (Paul Mainieri, LSU).
Georgia’s season ended this past Saturday as the Bulldogs finished 26-28. Up next, Georgia should have a handful of players and signees selected in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft which is June 8-10.
