Georgia Tech volleyball tops Virginia Tech, 3-1

Junior outside hitter Teegan Van Gunst tallied a season-best 23 kills to lead the Georgia Tech volleyball team (13-7, 4-4 ACC) past the Virginia Tech Hokies (13-7, 4-4) in four sets on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.

In the opening set, Georgia Tech jumped out to a 7-3, but the Hokies worked back to tie it at 12. From there, neither team led by more than one point and there were nine tied scores. With the score tied 21-21, Georgia Tech took a two-point lead on a Hokie error and a solo block by Sydney Wilson, giving the Yellow Jackets the momentum they needed to win the game, 25-22.

The second set was the same story and it was anybody’s game tied 23-23. After a hard fought battle, Virginia Tech was able to score the final two points to win the set, 25-23, and even the match 1-1.

After an early back and forth battle, Georgia Tech took the lead for good in set three, 5-4, on a serving ace by Ashley Askin. The Jackets were able to keep the pressure on the Hokies and won the set 25-18.

Leading by one in the fourth frame, 10-9, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-1 run to open their lead to 16-10.  The Hokies threatened late in the set and went on a 5-0 run to pull within one point, 19-18. The Yellow Jackets held on and clinched the set, 25-20, and the match on a kill by Teegan Van Gunst.

“So proud of the progress we have made as a team this past couple days,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “We have put together three very good performances and our focus now is to continue to build on this momentum and keep getting better.

“Teegan was in the zone tonight, she played an awesome match and the team fed off her performance and was able to execute our game plan for the win.”
