Big Ten announces football players of the week

Release from the Big Ten Conference:

Following Big Ten football games on Nov. 21, the offensive, co-defensive and co-special teams players of the week and freshman of the week in the Big Ten were announced this morning. Below are this week’s honorees:

Offensive Player of the Week
Nate Sudfeld, Indiana
Sr., QB, Modesto, Calif./Modesto Christian

  • Completed 23 of 35 passes for 385 yards and four touchdowns in the Hoosiers’ win over Maryland
  • Added a rushing touchdown to match his career high with five total touchdowns
  • Holds school career records with 54 touchdown passes, four 350-yard passing games and four games with at least four touchdown tosses
  • Earns his first career Offensive Player of the Week award
  • Last Indiana Offensive Player of the Week: Jordan Howard (Sept. 28, 2015)

Co-Defensive Players of the Week
Jon Reschke, Michigan State
So., LB, Sterling Heights, Mich./Brother Rice

  • Recorded six tackles, including a sack, in Michigan State’s victory at Ohio State
  • Anchored a Spartan defense that held Ohio State to 132 total yards of offense, more than 300 yards fewer than the Buckeyes’ average entering the contest
  • Added a quarterback hurry late in the second quarter with the game tied 7-7
  • Claims his first career Defensive Player of the Week honor
  • Last Michigan State Defensive Player of the Week: Malik McDowell (Nov. 16, 2015)

Deonte Gibson, Northwestern
Sr., DE, Lakewood, Ohio/St. Edward

  • Set career highs with four tackles for loss and three sacks in Northwestern’s victory at Wisconsin
  • Also registered six tackles, including four solo stops
  • Led a Northwestern unit that recorded a season-best 11 tackles for loss and six sacks
  • Earns his first career Defensive Player of the Week honor
  • Last Northwestern Defensive Player of the Week: Dean Lowry (Oct. 26, 2015)

Co-Special Teams Players of the Week
Griffin Oakes, Indiana
So., K, Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood

  • Matched a school record with four field goals for the second consecutive week, converting all four of his attempts against Maryland
  • Registered field goals from 21, 19, 48 and 36 yards
  • Leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally with a 90.9 percent field goal conversion rate this season
  • Claims his third career Special Teams Player of the Week honor and second in as many weeks
  • Last Indiana Special Teams Player of the Week: Griffin Oakes (Nov. 16, 2015)

Michael Geiger, Michigan State
Jr., K, Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills

  • Converted a 41-yard field goal as time expired to give Michigan State a 17-14 victory at Ohio State
  • Has recorded at least one field goal in nine of the team’s 11 games this season, including each of the last four contests
  • Ranks ninth in school history with 38 career field goals
  • Earns his first career Special Teams Player of the Week honor
  • Last Michigan State Special Teams Player of the Week: Jalen Watts-Jackson (Oct. 19, 2015)

Freshman of the Week
Shannon Brooks, Minnesota
RB, Atlanta, Ga./Pickens

  • Rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns in Minnesota’s win against Illinois
  • Averaged 10.2 yards per carry in the contest, including touchdown runs of five, 38 and 75 yards
  • Ranks second in the conference with 6.2 yards per carry in Big Ten play
  • Wins his third career and second consecutive weekly award
  • Last Minnesota Freshman of the Week: Shannon Brooks (Nov. 16, 2015)
