Release from Georgia Tech Athletics:
Junior outside hitter Teegan Van Gunst was named to the 2015 All-ACC First Team, the ACC announced Wednesday. The awards were decided based on a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches. Van Gunst is Georgia Tech’s first All-ACC selection since Monique Mead was selected to the first team in 2012.
“[Teegan Van Gunst] has worked hard and she has been the backbone of our team all season,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “They know who’s getting the ball. They know when the game’s tight that the ball is going to her. They’re serving her. She has been an outstanding player for us. She’s played that role very naturally and confidently.
“She’s very deserving. She’s a very hardworking player. It’s willing to learn, work hard and adjust. It’s all those things that she needed to do to do this. I think it’s a reflection of how well our team is playing and she was able to get a lot of help from her teammates. She made tremendous growth this season and it’s exciting to see her progress. I’m happy for her.”
The Fayetteville, Ga., native leads the ACC with 461 kills, averaging an ACC-best 3.97 kills/set. She has 20 double-doubles on the season, including 25 matches with 10-plus kills and 22 matches with 10-plus digs. Her 461 kills are the most by a Yellow Jacket since Monique Mead tallied 459 in 2012.
Van Gunst has started and played every set for Georgia Tech this season, and has been named the ACC Player of the Week twice (Sept.7, Sept. 28).
