Release from Kennesaw State athletics:

KENNESAW, Ga. – Kristi Piedimonte of the Kennesaw State volleyball team was named Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career.

“We’re really happy for both Kristi and our team for her being named A-Sun Freshman of the week,” head coach Keith Schunzel said. “Besides her physical skills, which are great, Kristi also brings a contagious energy and level of competitiveness to our team. Kristi improves every time she steps on the court and as she has gotten more and more comfortable with our attackers and in running our offense, she has relaxed some and her game has flourished because of it. She continues to do a lot of very impressive things early in her freshmen season. But like all awards, this is a team award. Because our team is playing at such a high level early in the season, Kristi is the first of hopefully many Owls to be recognized in 2014.”

Piedimonte totaled 144 assists last week in four matches along with 29 digs, 18 kills and six blocks. She recorded the first two double doubles of her career against Elon and UNC Asheville in the KSU Owls Invitational and set or matched all of her career highs with 52 assists, 10 digs and seven kills against UNC Asheville.

This weekend, the team will head to Coastal Carolina for their tournament. They will play Tennessee at 9 a.m. on Friday, Coastal Carolina on Friday night at 7 p.m. and will finish the tournament against Loyola Maryland on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
