Release from Georgia Tech Athletics:
Three-star wing Christian Matthews from National Christian Academy in Fort Washington, Md., has signed a national letter of intent to attend Georgia Tech, head coach Brian Gregory announced Thursday. He is the third highly-regarded prep prospect to cast his lot with the Yellow Jackets.
Matthews, a 6-6, 190-pound high scorer, attends the National Christian Academy and is a three-star prospect according to ESPN, Rivals and Scout. CBS-affiliate 247sports.comlists Matthews among the nation’s top 150 players while Scout.com ranks him 30th among the country’s small forwards and the best in Maryland. The Washington Postdescribed Matthews as “blessed with soft touch and plenty of range.”
“We are excited about Christian because he brings the versatile scoring skills that are highlighted in our system,” said Gregory. “He has the size, athletic ability and skill package to play multiple positions. He has proven his scoring ability from the three-point line as well as off the dribble. He also excels in the open court, and is an excellent range rebounder. He has gained national experience playing for National Christian Academy in high school and Team Takeover on the AAU circuit. With his family’s emphasis on academics, Christian is a perfect fit as a student-athlete here at Georgia Tech.”
As a junior, Matthews helped National Christian Academy to a 20-6 record and the Beltway Final while teaming up with current Yellow Jacket Sylvester Ogbonda for coach Trevor Brown. The small forward led his team in scoring with 22.4 points per game garnering All-Metro honors. Matthews suited up for Team Takeover on the AAU circuit this past summer. Matthews informed recruiting services that he selected Georgia Tech over Clemson, NC State and Cincinnati.
Tech previously signed 6-9 power forward Romello White of Suwanee, Ga., a four-star prospect ranked 70th in the nation who attends Wheeler High School, and 6-4 guard Josh Okogie of Snellville, Ga., a three-star prospect ranked 143rd in the nation who attends Shiloh High School.
