Georgia State Practice Facility Formally Opens

georgia state logoRelease from Georgia State Athletics:

With generous support from four long-time donors, the GSU Practice Facility formally opened on Tuesday.  Combined gifts from Brad and Patty Ferrer, along with Cathy Henson and Chris Carpenter helped provide the funding for the renovation of the facility next to the GSU Sports Arena.

The court in the renovated facility will be named the Cathy Henson – Patty Ferrer Court. The facility, which was formerly an aquatics building, will primarily house men and women’s basketball, along with volleyball, however, it will be open for all teams to use.

Along with a state-of-the-art floor, it includes six basketball goals and full volleyball practice set-up. After more than a decade of being sparsely used, the new facility will be active 365 days a year. Student-athletes will have full access to it, while the building can also be used for camps and much more.

The building also houses the new beach volleyball locker room which recently opened.

“We would like to thank the support of our donors and the University for helping to make this happen,” Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb said. “This is a huge step to help all of our programs. Our goal is to give all of our teams the first-class resources they need to succeed on and off the court.”

“I am so pleased with the new practice facility,” men’s basketball head coach Ron Hunter said. “The support from our donors, our administration and our fan base is incredible. Our program owes a special thanks to all of those who helped make this possible.”

“We are very excited and grateful for the new practice facility,” women’s basketball head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said. “It will allow us the flexibility to continue with skill development and allows us more time to shoot the basketball.”

“Our players and coaches could not be more excited about the opportunities this beautiful practice facility brings to our program,” volleyball head coach Sally Polhamus said. “The flexibility to adjust practice time around academics allows our entire team to train together. Adding a court for individual training sessions and freedom for open gym are just a couple benefits we will immediately receive. Our players are hungry to put the work in, now we have this amazing space for them to grow their game beginning this summer.  We want to thank everyone that made this facility possible for our current and future student-athletes.”
