Release from Georgia State Athletics:
Georgia State safety Bobby Baker was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time in his career after leading the Panthers’ strong defensive effort at No. 9 Wisconsin.
The senior from Sherman Oaks, Calif., collected 11 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup to help the Panthers hold a 17-13 fourth-quarter lead before falling 23-17. The defense kept the Panthers close despite playing without three starting defensive linemen.
Baker’s pass breakup came as the Badgers had third-and-four at the GSU 23-yard line on their first drive and forced Wisconsin to settle for a field goal.
With Georgia State holding a 6-0 lead in the second quarter, the defense held despite a short field for the Badgers, who took over at the GSU 23 after a fumbled snap. On third-and-goal at the 1-yard line, Baker recovered a fumble to prevent a score. That is the fourth fumble recovery of Baker’s career, tying the Georgia State career record.
Baker, named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt team and the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, earned his first Sun Belt weekly award after last year’s season opener vs. Charlotte, when he had two interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
