Big Ten Announces Football Players of the Week

big ten logoFollowing Big Ten football games on Sept. 24, the offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week and freshman of the week in the Big Ten were announced this morning. Below are this week’s honorees:

Offensive Player of the Week
Tommy Armstrong Jr., Nebraska
Sr., QB, Cibolo, Texas/Steele

  • Accounted for 378 yards of total offense, including one touchdown, in Nebraska’s win at Northwestern
  • Set a career high with 132 rushing yards, including a season-long 37-yard run
  • Threw for 246 yards and a touchdown without an interception
  • Claims the third Offensive Player of the Week award of his career
  • Last Nebraska Offensive Player of the Week: Tommy Armstrong Jr. (Nov. 9, 2015)

Defensive Player of the Week
T.J. Watt, Wisconsin
Jr., LB, Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee

  • Recorded six total tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, to guide Wisconsin to a road victory over Michigan State
  • Registered a career-high 2.5 sacks, giving him 4.5 sacks over his last three games
  • Added two quarterback hurries as the Badgers held the Spartans without a touchdown at home for just the second time since 2000
  • Earns his first career Defensive Player of the Week honor
  • Last Wisconsin Defensive Player of the Week: Joe Schobert (Oct. 5, 2015)

Special Teams Player of the Week
Ron Coluzzi, Iowa
Sr., P, Naperville, Ill./Naperville North

  • Punted seven times for an average of 42.0 yards per punt, including a season-best 55-yarder, in Iowa’s win at Rutgers
  • Had four of his seven punts downed inside the 20-yard line
  • Placed all three of his kickoffs into the end zone for a touchback
  • Earns his first career Special Teams Player of the Week honor
  • Last Iowa Special Teams Player of the Week: Marshall Koehn (Sept. 21, 2015)

Freshman of the Week
Alex Hornibrook, Wisconsin
QB, West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep

  • Threw for 195 yards and a touchdown in his first career start, leading the Badgers to a victory at Michigan State
  • Excelled on third downs, going 9-for-13 for 136 yards and a touchdown
  • Guided Wisconsin to its 11th win in its last 12 Big Ten road games and its first win at Spartan Stadium since 2002
  • Wins his first career weekly award
  • Last Wisconsin Freshman of the Week: T.J. Edwards (Oct. 19, 2015)
